Friday Wrap-Up 2, 09-01-17

What a fantastic week it was! We dived into our new book, ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ and are very nervous that Hiccup might not have a dragon. We are 3 and a half chapters in, so there is a lot more story to go. Some of our biggest questions in the story so far is whether Hiccup is ever going to get a dragon and whether we would want to be Vikings or not.

Our Godzilla investigations really took off this week as well. We realized earlier in the week that Godzilla is brown so predators can’t find and eat Godzilla (one of our new words today was camouflage, which Timo brought up as a way to explain how Godzilla hid from things that wanted to eat them). Today we built spiky Godzillas out of clay, toothpicks, and spaghetti pieces. We used the spikes and a big CHOMPER to see how Godzilla’s spikes help protect Godzilla from being eaten. We also found out that Godzilla definitely poops (Anja’s journal today featured a frowning Godzilla, because Godzilla hadn’t pooped for 3 days, so they had to take a bath and get things moving), but we decided that, since Godzilla has never peed in class, so they probably don’t pee. Next week we are tackling the question of what Godzilla eats and maybe why Godzilla doesn’t pee. If you have any ideas, make sure to bring them in on Tuesday!

Big thanks to the Jimenez family for the donation of the train set. We used it in our morning investigation today to estimate the distance from the start line to the finish line and see how many train sections it would take to connect the two points. Our kitchen is now fully decked out now as well thanks to the Konstantos family, so dramatic play has really gotten fun.

Anja said her favorite part of the week building with modeling clay, but Bisola said her favorite was playing bingo with the big kids. Teddy, Timo, and Paolo liked going to the park. Mr. Chris’s favorite part was comparing all our painted Godzillas to the real thing; he thought it was really cool.

One thing to be aware of is that, with the start of the school year, we’ve had a number of diseases going around. In particular, several students in school and two in our class have come down with strep throat. We’ve been talking about how important it is to wash our hands, but make sure to rest up and take any sickness seriously; we want you here and healthy! Today each family also brought home a coupon book. These are a way to support the school and get some savings at the same time.
