Friday Wrap-Up 10-13-17

We say goodbye to another fantastic week and wrap up a great novel! While I am sad to see ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ leave, we had a lot of fun reading and growing together. We enjoyed watching the movie and did a great job discussing it together. We made a version of Venn diagrams and talked about what it means for something to be the same and different. Anja pointed out that there was a girl in the movie, but the only girl in the book was Hiccup’s mom. Tove and Teddy both realized they thought Hiccup was younger in the book, so they drew the two different ages of Hiccup. Paolo, on the other hand said that Hiccup was one thing that was the same between the book and the movie, since he was a character in both. Niki struggled a little on deciding if Toothless was the same or different, since he only had one tooth in the book and lots of little teeth in the movie.

After we finished our discussion, we talked about which version we preferred. Some of us liked the book because it was more interesting, but others liked the colors and excitement of the movie. We also discussed that there were no girls in the book. We made a bar graph out of our preferred versions and realized that most of us preferred the movie to the book; we even realized 3 more of us liked the movie than the book!

Since the movie took most of the exploration time, housekeeping time! Artwork and class pictures went home today; if you need reshoots, refer to the Parent Notes email sent home from the office. We also have a new book order going home. The book order is due Monday October 30th, but you can return it anytime before then. You can also order online through the link on the right. I saw a couple of things that sounded interesting for the class. If you know your child is working on writing their letters and letter sounds, the Very First Phonics workbook sounds promising, as it is a wipe-clean workbook they can practice in. Our exploration is focusing on the body, so the Our Amazing Senses Pack would be appropriate. Finally, we might have finished ‘How to Train Your Dragon’, but you KNOW I’m still obsessed  with dragons, so the Dragon Stories pack might tickle some kids’ fancies. Now, obviously, these are just recommendations, and you can be guided by what your child likes or what you feel appropriate. In any case, have a great weekend, and I can’t wait to have everyone back together on Monday for a full week! I’m also excited to see all of you on Friday for Curriculum Night!

PS, if any of you are going to check out Open House Chicago, Mr. Chris and Mx. Sami will be volunteering as greeters at Margarita European Inn in Evanston from 10-1 on Saturday and would love to say hi!
