Saying Goodbye to Charlotte 02-02-18

Our day was completely dominated by Charlotte’s Web. In our voting today, we voted on which was our favorite story so far. Niki made sure that everyone that wanted to vote for Charlotte’s Web got the right color, that way they’ll vote correctly. Rebecca wanted to vote for Charlotte because she liked all the baby spiders saying goodbye. Anja explained that while she liked different parts of the book, they both wanted to vote for Charlotte. Timo, on the other hand, really liked Hiccup being brave, so he voted for How to Train Your Dragon. Tove still remembers laughing when Hiccup got sneezed out of the dragon, so she voted for Hiccup too. Bisola wasn’t really surprised that no one voted for the BFG or Despereaux. When it ended in a tie, Jerome wished that Yianni had been here, since he probably would have voted for Hiccup too. We have learned so much graphing for the whole month. It was especially interesting seeing how they looked at the graph tracking who preferred books v movies now, after all that work.

As we watched the movie, we drew the covers to our books and talked about what we saw. Bisola drew all the baby spiders saying goodbye, an image that really stuck with her. Teddy wanted to put Wilbur doing a backflip on the cover, since it was so funny. Gia responded that talking to Uncle was even funnier. In the movie, things stood out more, while other pieces were different. We were very surprised to see that Templeton had kids in the movie, unlike the book. Rebecca now understood how silly it was that Wilbur was in the stroller. Paolo wasn’t sure if the rat talking was Roscuro, but Niki reminded him that this rat was named Templeton. In our voting, this was the first unanimous vote in favor of the movie (I watched this movie as a kid and still love it).

The students should have brought home three important papers today. First, their illustrated Charlotte’s Web; try reading through it and highlight the times they did a great job picking a highlight or writing out their own description. Second, Ms. Leslie’s class is doing a donation drive for shelter animals and we are sending home the items they requested. Third, February’s book order. The order will be placed on February 16th, so please place any orders by that time. This time, the stand-out item is the Imagination Collection. If you haven’t noticed, I’m a big fan of books that highlight creativity and imagination, and these books are amazing inspirations for children. I have several other recommendations you can see here. Don’t forget, you can order at any time through the link on the right. Have a great weekend everyone!
