Unwrapping a mystery

Today we came in to find three mysterious bags on the table. Since we couldn’t see inside them, it was tough to find out what was inside. Teddy was pretty sure one of the bags had the toy shark in it, while Tove thought it was some legos. Max figured one of them had to be a bear, and Anja agreed, saying she could feel the feet and ears. Turns out, they were right! After we opened up the bags, we discussed how we used clues, like how hard something was or its shape, to figure out what was inside it. Hopefully, out experience using clues will help us with even tougher mysteries!

The highlight of our day was definitely starting our partnership with Ms. Alex’s class. As some of you know, we received a 3-d printer this year and we’re excited to start using it. I explained how 3-d printers work and some of the things we can build together. We’re going to be partnering with Ms. Alex’s class to design and build, so I’ll keep you updated with our progress.

To show the class how 3-d printers work, I made a robot to explain the process. That got the class talking about the robots they would build, which was a lot of fun. Yianni wants a robot that would help him clean, so we talked about how maybe it’s arms would be vacuum cleaners. Gia reasoned that since she and Niki wanted the same kind of robot, they could work together to make an even bigger robot. I really appreciated the way that the class is thinking about how the function of the robot could impact its form. This is the kind of critical thinking that is going to make some pretty great creations with Ms. Alex’s class this year!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!
