Taller than a penguin?

Today we wanted to incorporate math into our penguin exploration.  We measured a paper penguin that was about 4 feet tall using a nonstandard measuring unit (small paper penguins).  We learned that the penguin was about 6 units tall.  Next, we measured ourselves to determine who was shorter than the penguin, who was taller and who was about the same.  We learned that Timo, Sokrates, and Anja were 6 units tall, which was the same height as the penguin; Rebecca, Niki, and Yanni were 5.5 units tall; Teddy was 5.75 units tall; Gia, Max, Tove, Paolo, and Junie were 5 units tall.  Nobody was taller than our penguin.  We graphed our results on the board using a bar graph.  Everybody was eager and excited to participate and to compare their heights to the penguin’s.  All students are a pleasure to work with and they make my job easy:) Next week we will return to our topic with an art activity.

Some housekeeping stuff about tomorrow. For the field trip, please make sure that everyone is in uniform and on time tomorrow, as we are hoping to leave promptly at 9. If your child is not receiving hot lunch from the school, please send a packaged lunch in a disposable container with their name written on it. I’m hoping to restart the classroom twitter (@MrKrugerChi) and use the #FieldTripFun hashtag tomorrow, so there might be some updates throughout the day. Also, the Art to Remember order forms went home today, so check them out. Have a great night everyone!
