Birds Take Flight

Today was quite beautiful. We cut out the birds we painted for Read for the Record and hung them up in the hall, creating a beautiful flock.

We also tackled a very tricky problem of the day, which kept us on our toes (see picture below). Sokrates estimated that it was going to be around 10 pins, but Anja said that it had to be more than 10; she knew 5+5=10, and we had 5+7, so it was going to be more than 10. I really dig that reasoning. As we were wrapping up the class, I wondered aloud about where the other 3 was, since we only added one 3 and there were two in the problem. Timo chimed in that, oh the other 3 was the number of games, not the pins, so we didn’t need to add anything else. That was a pretty good catch! I was even blown away by the math I saw used at recess. In a game of ‘Mr. Fox, what time is it’, the players thought the fox had said to take 12 steps, but he only said 10. Max said it wasn’t a problem and told everyone to just take 2 steps back. That’s some on the fly problem solving!

Ms. Marta wrapped up her penguin exploration with a game of “Could a Penguin…”, which was hilarious. Paolo was sure that they couldn’t play soccer, since their claws would pop the ball. Tove added that, since they could only waddle, it wouldn’t be a very quick game. When visiting a pool, Junie thought they would look for fish, while Yianni was sure they would be able to swim, since they swim at home in the Antarctic. Gia didn’t think they’d be able to use a bike, since their legs wouldn’t reach. Teddy added that their claws would get caught in the pedals, which was pretty weird to think about. What a great job thinking through hypothetical situations using what they knew about penguins!

Don’t forget, tomorrow is Halloween. Students should dress up in whatever school-appropriate costume they would like. The parade is open to parents and begins at 1:00, with dismissal at 1:30. Since we are following the early dismissal schedule, make sure your child arrives by 8:45 and we are NOT going to the bank. The PTO is also providing a pizza lunch, so students only need a snack. If you have any questions, refer to the parent notes or contact me. Have a great night and see everyone tomorrow for a SPOOKY DAY!!!!
