Seeing It Through

The biggest highlight of the day was definitely painting today, but we used transparencies instead of paper. We started by listing some things in the class that were transparent. Rebecca pointed out Godzilla’s ‘bathtub’, and Sokrates said the window was transparent. Things got complicated when Paolo said that paper is transparent. Niki said it wasn’t, since she couldn’t see through it, but others thought it might be because light shows through. Gia and Yianni debated it for awhile, but weren’t able to come to a firm decision either way. After the discussion had gone for awhile, I introduced the term ‘translucent, which the class agreed was more accurate. At home tonight, try to look around for some objects that are transparent or translucent! When it came time to paint, Teddy was laughing because it was hard to see what was the transparency and what was the table, making it a little hard to paint. I can’t wait to see how they look tomorrow when they dry!

Our other exploration was stringing beads, but this time we stretched to make a pattern in the beads. Timo made his first pattern and wanted to make a second pattern on the same pipe cleaner, so he left a space and used yellow hearts to show where one pattern ended and the other began. Anja decided that, while most of her classmates were making patterns based on color, she would go based on shape, which was fun for her. I was really impressed with the variety of patterns I was seeing, beyond just the ABABAB patterns I expected.

The rest of our day was full of story time, identifying clues and motives in Nancy Drew, and even a trip to the library, even though it wasn’t Monday. Tove was thrilled she was able to go to the library and was excited to be a book buddy with someone, especially since it was a silly book about creepy underwear. With the holiday, I’m going to push the book order back to next Friday, the 14th. Write up and recommendations will be coming out tomorrow hopefully.

Don’t forget, we are going to the bank tomorrow, so bring in those deposits, $10 max please!
