Through a Paper Darkly

Today, inspired by our work yesterday, we painted on translucent paper (parchment paper) to see how it is different. Some of the class focused on how they could see the colors through the paper better than normal, but not as clearly as through the transparencies yesterday. Other students were interested in the way the paint seemed to leave little spots and bead up on the parchment paper, instead of being absorbed like it was in regular paper. This was quite an interesting little exploration!

Our reading today really took off. For the first time, the class really seemed to understand what a will is and why everyone is looking for it. I was even pleasantly surprised, during their discussion of what the mean Topham sisters were muttering about, that someone said they were talking about how to find the will before Nancy did. This showed that they knew the will was valuable, that the Topham sisters wanted it, and why they were whispering about it. I could not be more thrilled to see all of the lightbulbs coming on in class!

The trip to the bank was super successful and we had a blast comparing our slinkies and realizing that the colors were all the same, they were just cut in different spots. Some of the class even asked to see the boxes the slinkies came in so they could get more ideas on how to use them. What a fantastic day!

Book orders went home today and they aren’t due until NEXT Friday, thanks to the holiday. You can see the book order online here. If you want to order online, you can order through our classroom page here, enter our classroom code, R9YHT, or click on the Scholastic banner on the right. I usually try to highlight one or two books from each order and this time it was hard to pick just two. Ada Twist is an awesome book full or fun experiments that I wouldn’t mind trying in the classroom and wish I had been able to get as a kid myself. What Do You Do with a Problem is not only beautiful, but it is a great way to talk about how we can face our problems. Check them out or whatever tickles your fancy. Remember, orders go out NEXT FRIDAY, September 14th.

Have a great night everyone and see you tomorrow!
